Learning umrah step by step before travelling is not optional for first-time pilgrims. A guided group can help, but every pilgrim should understand the basic order of worship before reaching Makkah.
For a general overview, Umrah is the pilgrimage to Makkah that can generally be performed outside the fixed Hajj days. For official journey information, pilgrims can also review the Nusuk Umrah journey page.
Step 1: Prepare before the flight
Pack documents, Ihram clothing if required, comfortable footwear, medication, unscented hygiene items, a small prayer mat, dua list, phone charger and power bank. Keep passport, visa, flight ticket and hotel confirmation in one document folder.
Step 2: Enter Ihram before Miqat
Men wear the two-piece Ihram cloth. Women wear modest clothing that meets Islamic requirements. Before crossing the Miqat, make the intention for Umrah and begin the Talbiyah. Do not wait until after Miqat to think about Ihram.
Step 3: Arrive in Makkah with focus
After hotel check-in, rest if needed and follow the guidance of the group leader if travelling with one. Do not rush into crowds while exhausted if the schedule allows proper preparation.
Step 4: Perform Tawaf
Tawaf means circling the Kaaba seven times in worship. Stay calm, protect your focus and avoid pushing. Families should agree on a meeting point in case they separate.
Step 5: Pray after Tawaf if possible
After Tawaf, pilgrims pray two rakats where possible without blocking others. If the area is crowded, follow safe crowd movement and pray where allowed.
Step 6: Perform Sa’i
Sa’i is walking seven times between Safa and Marwah. Comfortable footwear and patience matter. Elderly pilgrims should pace themselves and use available support where appropriate.
Step 7: Shave or trim hair
Men shave or trim their hair. Women trim a small amount from the end of the hair according to accepted guidance. After this, the pilgrim exits Ihram restrictions.
